SCHEDULE
1997

This project involved the removal, rehabilitation, and reinstallation of the sixty 37 foot x 9 foot spillway gates of the Wesley Seale Dam, and the design, fabrication, and installation of a de-watering bulkhead.

The spillway gates were removed with a 100 ton barge mounted crane and transported to a storage site near the dam where the rehabilitation work could be performed.

The work on each gate included abrasive blasting for red lead paint; structural steel repairs, side seal removal, and painting.

A SSPC Class 1A containment system was provided by constructing a steel building next to the dam. Dust collection equipment was attached to the building to provide all the required ventilation.

After the gates were abrasive blasted, all steel surfaces were inspected for irregularities and failures. Steel repairs and modifications required included skin plate patching and adding structural members for additional strength.

The paint system that was brush and airless spray applied to the steel surfaces of the spillway crest gates and floating bulkhead was : 1 coat of MC Mio Zinc, and 2 coats of MC Tar, manufactured by Wasser High Tech Coatings.

After rehabilitation was completed, the gates were transported by barge and installed back in their original positions.

The work on this project was scheduled and sequenced very efficiently and the project was completed ahead of schedule. Furthermore, the use of innovative methods caused the original bid to be far less than the engineer's estimate.
